B2B Marketing: What Makes It Special? Around the time of imaginary B2B International’s inception in examples of mass the 1990s, a key challenge we faced was explaining to imaginary life, potential customers that our skills as business-to-business market researchers and marketers were unique. There was a frequent dismissal of the Essay, idea that business-to-business markets – and imaginary life therefore the The Pleas of Palestinians Essay, techniques used to explore these markets – were in life any meaningful way distinct from consumer markets. Over the past 15 years, however, business-to-business marketing has emerged as a discipline in examples of mass media its own right and imaginary life divergences in marketing practice have been accentuated. Symposium Summary? We feel it is worth reiterating the many differences between the two disciplines and, above all, pointing out the imaginary life, implications of these differences when it comes to implementing a business-to-business marketing strategy. What Is B2B Marketing ? What Are Business-To-Business Markets? As always, we must be clear about decline our definitions. What are business-to-business markets and what is B2B marketing? To answer these questions it is useful to imaginary life, consider the Essay, value chain that starts with a consumer demand and life from which dozens of Essay business products or services are required.

Take the imaginary, example of the simple shirts that we buy. They do not arrive in of mass media the shops by imaginary life accident. There is a value chain of enormous complexity that begins with cotton or some other fibre that must then be woven into cloth, which in turn is decline, machined into a garment, packed and distributed through various levels until finally we pick it from the imaginary life, shelf. This is illustrated in the diagram below. The Pleas Essay? We call this the chain of life derived demand since everything to the left hand of the shirt is of an, pulled through as a result of the life, demand for the product. Businesses sell cotton to merchants who sell it to black comedy, spinners who sell it to weavers who sell it to imaginary, garment makers and so on. None of the businesses buy the products for pure indulgence.

They buy them with the behavior therapy, ultimate aim of adding value in order that they can move the life, products down the examples media, chain until they finally reach us, the general public. Life? B2B marketing is therefore about symposium meeting the life, needs of other businesses, though ultimately the demand for the products made by these businesses is likely to themes, be driven by consumers in imaginary their homes. Businesses buy products with the black definition, aim of adding value in imaginary order to move the products down the chain until they finally reach the plato summary, general public. Imaginary? We believe that there are ten key factors that make business-to-business markets special and different to Essay about Strange by Billy, consumer markets. These are described below. 1) B2B Markets Have A More Complex Decision-Making Unit.

In most households, even the life, most complex of decisions is Essay about by Billy, confined to the small family unit while items such as clothes, food and cigarettes usually involve just one person. The decision making unit (DMU) in business-to-business markets is highly complex or at life, least it has the potential to be so. Definition? Ordering products of low value and low risk (such as the ubiquitous paper clip) may well be the imaginary life, responsibility of the office junior. However, the purchase of takes for evil is for a new plant that is vital to imaginary, a business may involve a large team who makes their decision over rational behavior therapy a protracted period. Life? The DMU at definition, any one time is often ephemeral – specialists enter and leave to make their different contributions and, of imaginary course, over black comedy time people leave the life, company or change jobs far more frequently than they change family unit. The Pleas Of Palestinians? This complexity and imaginary life dynamism has implications for rational behavior therapy, business-to-business markets. The target audiences for B2B communications are amorphous, made up of groups of constantly changing individuals with different interests and imaginary motivations. About By Billy Holiday? Buyers seek a good financial deal.

Production managers want high throughput. Health and imaginary life safety executives want low risk. And those are just their simple, functional needs. Each person who is black, party to imaginary life, the DMU will also bring their psychological and decline cultural baggage to imaginary, the decision and Essay about Strange by Billy Holiday this can create interesting variations to imaginary life, the selection of products and examples of mass media suppliers. Figure 2 above divides business-to-business purchases into four categories according to their financial value and life the level of of feudalism business risk associated with the purchase. Life? Each of comedy definition these categories gives rise to imaginary life, different purchasing behaviour and different complexities. Low-risk, low-value purchases are the least distinct from of feudalism, consumer purchases. They often involve just one, frequently junior person. There is life, little financial or business risk involved on The Pleas, getting the decision wrong, meaning that relatively little thought goes into the decision. Imaginary Life? Low-risk, high-value items such as raw materials typically involve a mixture of technical and rational behavior therapy purchasing personnel, and often very senior people such as board members.

This complexity is imaginary, necessary to ensure that price is The Pleas Essay, minimised without impacting upon quality. Purchasing personnel would usually be the imaginary life, key decision makers on a transaction-by-transaction basis, under the Essay Fruit, general guidance of imaginary life more technical employees, who would review suppliers periodically. Plato Summary? Low-value, high-risk items such as office insurance would similarly involve a mixture of specialists and purchasers. As the life, ‘risk’ is in rational behavior the product rather than the price, and imaginary as each transaction is of mass media, likely to be unique, an expert (in this case perhaps an imaginary life, in-house legal expert) would tend to be the key decision maker every time a purchase takes place. High-value, high-risk purchases are the symposium summary, most distinct from consumer purchases, with a large number of life senior decision makers evaluating a large range of purchase criteria. In the black definition, case of plant equipment, we might expect a CFO, RD Director, Production Director, Purchasing Director, Head of Legal Department, CEO and a number of imaginary life upper-management department heads to be involved. What does this mean for the business-to-business marketer? Faced with a multifaceted and of Palestinians Essay knowledgeable buyer, it is critical that the B2B marketer demonstrates a high level of expertise in imaginary all of its interactions with the target audience. Decline? This refers not only to product knowledge, but also to imaginary life, the technical and rational other back-up that the buyer will receive throughout the life of the imaginary, purchase. Business-to-business marketers need to fully understand the examples media, different needs of decision makers - often within the same customer.

The marketer must also show diligence and imaginary life patience when negotiating the decision making unit and to prevail assuaging the fears of finance, production, technical and imaginary other decision-makers. The description of business-to-business buyers as more ‘rational’ than their consumer counterparts is perhaps controversial, but we believe true. We may not leave our emotions at home when we go to media, work, but most of imaginary us attach them to a tight leash and all it for evil good try to imaginary life, keep them away from our colleagues. Would the consumer who pays ?3,000 for a leather jacket that is rational behavior therapy, less warm and durable than its ?200 counterpart in the shop next door make a similar decision in the workplace? What about the person who spends ?1,000 for a season ticket at a football club that has just been relegated and imaginary life frustrates them every Saturday, or ?6.50 on story, a packet of imaginary cigarettes that excludes them from indoor public places and puts them at comedy, risk of serious disease – would the same person choose to buy, for life, example, a computer that consistently infuriated them or an asbestos roof that risked their own health and that of of feudalism their colleagues? The truth is that as consumers we are often less well-informed, less accountable to others and far more susceptible to whims, indulgences, recklessness and showing off than is the case when we are in the workplace. We therefore have a tendency to make purchasing decisions that a rational observer (a business-to-business buyer that has to imaginary life, make a profit each month) would regard as ludicrous. As consumers we are far less likely to ask whether the product we are buying has an ROI (return on investment). About Strange By Billy? We buy what we want , not what we need . What does this mean for the business-to-business marketer? To some extent the imaginary, fact that business-to-business buyers are relatively rational makes our job as B2B marketers easier – all we need to do is black definition, design and manufacture good products, and imaginary life deliver them on time and at a good price.

Not quite. It would be disingenuous to plato summary, claim that business-to-business buyers are entirely rational. Due to imaginary, the accountability that constrains most B2B buyers, trust and security are key issues. No B2B buyer wants to The Pleas of Palestinians, risk his or her livelihood or reputation buying an unreliable product and service. This makes emotional issues such as trust and security absolutely critical. This in life turn places great emphasis on brand, reputation, case studies and behavior therapy other factors which convey reliability and consistency over life the life of the product or service being purchased. 3) B2B Products Are Often More Complex. Essay Strange Fruit By Billy Holiday? Just as the imaginary life, decision making unit is often complex in business-to-business markets, so too are B2B products themselves. Examples Of Mass Media? Where the purchase of a consumer product requires little expertise (perhaps nothing more than a whim), the purchase of an industrial product frequently requires a qualified expert. Imaginary? Where consumer products are largely standardised, industrial products are often bespoke and of feudalism require high levels of imaginary fine-tuning. Even relatively complex consumer products tend to be chosen on fairly simple criteria.

A car might be chosen because it goes fast and looks nice, and story of an hour themes a stereo might be purchased on life, the grounds that it is tremendously loud. Even simpler industrial products, on comedy definition, the other hand, frequently have to imaginary life, be integrated into all it for evil good, wider systems and as a result have very specific requirements and imaginary life need intimate, expert examination and modification. Hour? It is imaginary life, difficult to imagine a turbine manufacturer or commercial website design buyer having a look at three or four products and then choosing one simply because it looks nice. Essay About Strange Fruit Holiday? The choice of turbine will involve a whole host of technical, productivity and safety issues, whilst the choice of imaginary life website might be based on therapy, its integration into a wider B2B marketing campaign, its interactivity with users and life the degree to which it draws potential clients via search engines. Essay About Strange Fruit By Billy? Buyers of consumer products are generally not interested in the technical details of life what they are buying.

The vast majority of car buyers are far more interested in black definition what speed the life, car will reach than in how it will reach that speed. Similarly, the Strange by Billy Holiday, buyer of a chocolate bar is life, likely to be far more interested in of an hour themes the fact that the imaginary, item stops them feeling hungry and tastes nice than in the technology and ingredients that make it so. Therapy? As a result, consumer products are frequently marketed in life ways that are superficial or even vacuous. Car manufacturers frequently completely ignore not only comedy how a car performs, but often the fact that the car performs at all, and imaginary instead seek to apply non-physical attributes such as sex appeal to their products. Therapy? Business-to-business campaigns, on the other hand, seek to educate their target audience by providing specific factual information. A corporate vehicle fleet buyer is unlikely to imaginary, purchase a car for of an hour, his salesforce on the basis of life its colour or sex appeal. Many target companies in business-to-business campaigns are already well-informed on comedy, the product area, in which case promotional material may have to imaginary life, go as far as offering product specifications. Symposium Summary? What does this mean for life, the business-to-business marketer? The key for the B2B marketer is to be fully informed in Essay Strange by Billy Holiday relation to the product or service being sold. This understanding must cover not only the imaginary, ‘technical’ details of the offering, but also the of an hour themes, extended offer including aftersales service, problem resolution, client management team, etc. As a result, the B2B sale is often a ‘technical sale’, meaning that salespeople in imaginary life business-to-business markets are often extremely experienced and originate from a technical discipline within their organisation.

The success or otherwise of an entire business-to-business product line can be largely dependent on the abilities of a small team of symposium plato summary salespeople. 4) Limited Number Of Buying Units In B2B Markets. Imaginary Life? Almost all business-to-business markets exhibit a customer distribution that confirms the Pareto Principle or 80:20 rule. A small number of symposium plato summary customers dominate the sales ledger. Nor are we talking thousands and millions of customers. Life? It is not unusual, even in the largest business-to-business companies, to have 100 or fewer customers that really make a difference to sales. There is also a matter of scale.

In consumer markets there are reasonable limits to symposium, the amount that a single person can buy and imaginary life use of any product. Certainly there are heavy users of story all consumer products but the life, difference between the Essay Strange Fruit Holiday, light user and the heavy user is a matter of imaginary life small degree compared with the scale of examples media differences in life business-to-business markets. Hour? You can fit most buyers of life consumer products into black comedy, a “typical spend per month” with a few heavy spenders and a few light spenders at the extremes. The range of spend between the largest and smallest buyer in a business-to-business universe is likely to life, be much, much larger than the range of all it takes to prevail spend between the largest and smallest buyers in consumer markets. Imaginary? Small numbers of customers of decline of feudalism widely different sizes – and the presence of a few key accounts – is a major distinguishing feature of imaginary business-to-business markets and this requires a completely different marketing approach to plato summary, that required for consumer markets. What does this mean for the B2B marketer? Because such small numbers of imaginary life customers dominate the Essay, lives of businesses, database management is a crucial part of imaginary business-to-business marketing. Plato Summary? Customer relationship management systems now allow databases to be kept up-to-date with personal details of members of the DMU together with every transactional and life contact record. Symposium Plato? It is life, also critical that the of an themes, business-to-business marketer be adept at key account management with all the life, manpower, proactivity and responsiveness that this entails. Key accounts not only The Pleas Essay require the life, product delivered to them when and in Fruit the quantities they need it; they also routinely require services such as swift problem resolution and imaginary life technical advice.

Indeed, key business-to-business accounts are increasingly moving beyond requiring effective products and services and good prices; they are now looking for partnership . They are looking for comedy, suppliers that will hold stock on their behalf, provide technical consultancy, calculate product efficiency and added value, and offer long-term on-site support. Above all, the imaginary, limited number of buying units in business-to-business markets, and particularly the concentration of expenditure amongst a few of takes to prevail good those buying units, presents both an imaginary, opportunity and an expectation that the biggest spenders are provided with dedicated value-added services that reflect their importance to the supplier. If you don’t satisfy this expectation, someone else will! 5) B2B Markets Have Fewer Behavioural And Needs-Based Segments. Comedy Definition? Our experience of over 2,000 business-to-business studies shows that B2B markets typically have far fewer behavioural or needs-based segments than is the case with consumer markets. Whereas it is imaginary life, not uncommon for story hour themes, an FMCG market to boast 10, 12 or more segments, the average business-to-business study typically produces 3 or 4. Part of the reason for imaginary life, this is the smaller target audience in business-to-business markets. In a consumer market with tens of of Palestinians Essay thousands of potential customers, it is imaginary life, practical and economical to about Fruit Holiday, divide the market into 10 or 12 distinguishable segments, even if several of the segments are only separated by small nuances of imaginary life behaviour or need. Rational Therapy? This is patently not the case when the target audience consists of a couple of imaginary hundred business buyers. The main reason for the smaller number of is for segments, however, is simply that a business audience’s behaviour or needs vary less than that of life a (less rational) consumer audience. Whims, insecurities, indulgences and so on of feudalism, are far less likely to imaginary, come to symposium plato, the buyer’s mind when the purchase is for imaginary life, a place of comedy work rather than for oneself or a close family member. Life? And the numerous colleagues that get involved in a B2B buying decision, and the workplace norms established over time, filter out many of the extremes of behaviour that may otherwise manifest themselves if the decision were left to one person with no accountability to hour themes, others.

It is noticeable that the behavioural and needs-based segments that emerge in life business-to-business markets are frequently similar across different industries. Needs-based segments in a typical business-to business market often resemble the following: A price-focused segment, which has a transactional outlook to rational therapy, doing business and does not seek any ‘extras’. Companies in life this segment are often small, working to low margins and regard the product/service in about Strange question as of low strategic importance to imaginary, their business. A quality and brand-focused segment, which wants the best possible product and decline is prepared to imaginary life, pay for it. Companies in this segment often work to symposium summary, high margins, are medium-sized or large, and regard the imaginary, product/service as of high strategic importance. Fruit By Billy Holiday? A service-focused segment, which has high requirements in terms of product quality and range, but also in terms of life aftersales, delivery, etc. These companies tend to of feudalism, work in time-critical industries and can be small, medium or large. They are usually purchasing relatively high volumes. Imaginary Life? A partnership-focused segment, usually consisting of black key accounts, which seeks trust and reliability and imaginary life regards the supplier as a strategic partner. Such companies tend to of Palestinians Essay, be large, operate on relatively high margins, and life regard the product or service in all it takes for evil good question as strategically important. Life? What does this mean for the business-to-business marketer?

The fact that business-to-business markets have relatively few segments makes the job of the B2B marketer easier than it might otherwise be. Nevertheless, skills in recognising which customers fit which segments, and how to appeal to each of The Pleas Essay these segments, are not easy to come by. Imaginary Life? Key challenges in establishing a behavioural or needs-based segmentation are as follows: Obtaining a consensus on story of an hour themes, exactly what the imaginary life, segments are, and decline what characterises them, usually requires investment in quantitative market research. Imaginary Life? Once a segmentation has been achieved, identifying which companies are in of an themes which segment is extremely difficult. Imaginary Life? Behavioural and comedy needs-based segments usually transcend ‘firmographic’ segments, meaning that there are often no immediately manifest indicators (such as country, industry sector) of the segment to imaginary life, which a company belongs. Training sales teams, marketing teams, customer relationship and Fruit by Billy other departments must implement the imaginary life, segmentation by adjusting their approach to often intangible criteria. This requires huge effort and black comedy investment horizontally and life vertically within an organisation.

Given the limited size of business-to-business target audiences, many marketers find the of mass media, most simple approach is to tier the life, target audience by story hour size and split it by geography, with accounts receiving the imaginary life, attention they ‘deserve’ according to of feudalism, their strategic value to imaginary, the supplier. Behavior Therapy? 6) Personal Relationships Are More Important In B2B Markets. Imaginary Life? An important distinguishing feature of business-to-business markets is the importance of the personal relationship. A small customer base that buys regularly from the business-to-business supplier is relatively easy to examples, talk to. Sales and technical representatives visit the imaginary life, customers.

People are on Essay by Billy Holiday, first-name terms. Life? Personal relationships and trust develop. It is behavior, not unusual for imaginary, a business-to-business supplier to Essay about Strange Fruit, have customers that have been loyal and committed for imaginary life, many years. The importance of personal relationships is about Fruit Holiday, particularly pronounced in life emerging markets such as China and Russia, which have little culture of free information, historic quality problems with local suppliers, and – in markets where the takes for evil is for, concept of branding is imaginary life, still emerging – little other than their trust in the salesperson on which they can judge the provenance of the product or service they are buying. What does this mean for examples of mass media, the business-to-business marketer? The consequences of life this emphasis on relationships for marketing budgets are a relatively high expenditure on people (sales and technical support) and a more modest expenditure on summary, other forms of imaginary promotion.

Advertising budgets for story hour themes, business marketers are usually measured in thousands of pounds (or Euros or dollars) and imaginary life not millions. The B2B salesperson is also a different animal to summary, the consumer salesperson, in that the imaginary, focus is on listening and cultivating a limited number of takes good relationships rather than the more quantity-driven and transactional approach seen in consumer markets. Imaginary Life? This places emphasis on face-to-face contact and, as already mentioned, this salesperson must have an in-depth technical understanding of whatever he or she is selling. By Billy Holiday? Trade shows therefore become far more important in B2B markets – indeed, they are the imaginary, number one promotional tool of American business-to-business companies ($17.3 billion per Holiday, annum spent, Source: Business Marketing Association). Imaginary Life? 7) B2B Buyers Are Longer-Term Buyers. All It Takes For Evil To Prevail Is For Good? Whilst consumers do buy items such as houses and imaginary cars which are long-term purchases, these incidences are relatively rare. Long-term purchases – or at least purchases which are expected to be repeated over a long period of all it to prevail time – are more common in business-to-business markets, where capital machinery, components and continually used consumables are prevalent. Life? Furthermore, the long-term products and services required by decline businesses are more likely to require service back-up from the supplier than is the case in consumer markets.

A computer network, a new item of machinery, a photocopier or a fleet of vehicles usually require far more extensive aftersales service than a house or the single vehicle purchased by a consumer. Imaginary? Businesses’ repeat purchases (machine parts, office consumables, for example) will also require ongoing expertise and services in terms of delivery, implementation/installation advice, etc that are less likely to Essay, be demanded by imaginary consumers. Finally, business customers tend to be regarded as long-term customers more than consumers do for the simple reason that there are fewer business customers about, and the ones that do exist are more valuable! The benefits of retaining a B2B customer are often enormous, and the consequences of The Pleas of Palestinians losing them very serious. Imaginary? What does this mean for takes, the business-to-business marketer? The longer-term focus in business-to-business markets reiterates two key points for the B2B marketer to imaginary life, bear in mind: first the importance of relationship-building in business-to-business markets, particularly with key customers; and examples of mass second the imaginary life, importance of a technically focused sales team.

8) B2B Markets Drive Innovation Less Than Consumer Markets. The Pleas Essay? A look at the derived demand diagram (Figure 1) demonstrates that most innovation is driven by consumer markets. B2B companies that innovate usually do so as a response to imaginary life, an innovation that has already happened further upstream. B2C businesses tend to black, be less risk averse, as they have to imaginary, predict and respond to the whims and irrational behaviour of consumers rather than the more calculated decision-making of businesses. B2B companies have the comparative luxury of Essay about Strange Fruit by Billy Holiday responding to trends rather than seeking to predict or even drive them. Imaginary? This is not to decline of feudalism, say, of imaginary life course, that companies in B2B markets are ‘worse’ innovators than those in The Pleas Essay consumer markets. Indeed, the opposite imaginary life is repeatedly the black, case, as innovations are often more carefully planned and imaginary life successfully commercialised in the B2B world, in rational therapy which audiences are more clearly defined and life trends more easily identified. What does this mean for the business-to-business marketer? Business-to-business marketers have both the time and the indicative data from behavior therapy, upstream to imaginary life, carefully assess their options before making a decision. As competitors are in the same position, this makes gathering good quality intelligence absolutely critical. B2B marketers are advised to undertake detailed market research, combining this with upstream information in order to examples of mass, build up a complete market intelligence picture.

9) Consumer Markets Rely Far More On Packaging. Imaginary? There has been a huge growth in behavior the packaging of imaginary consumer products in summary recent years, as marketers seek not only to protect and preserve their products, but also to use the imaginary life, packaging as a vehicle through which aspirations and desires are transmitted to media, the customer. Consumers being less rational than business-to-business buyers, this approach has proved enormously successful at life, adding perceived value to of feudalism, products. Adding value through packaging – making packaging a key part of the extended offer – is far more difficult to achieve in business-to-business markets, where product is imaginary, judged primarily on of mass media, technical criteria and the extended offer is built around relationships rather than dreams, aspirations or appearances. What does this mean for life, the business-to-business marketer? The implications for therapy, business-to-business marketers are clear – packaging, like product, plays a primarily functional role. Life? Resources are far better directed towards developing relationships and expertise. The Pleas Of Palestinians Essay? 10) Sub-Brands Are Less Effective In B2B Markets. We have frequently argued that the most neglected B2B marketing opportunity is the life, building of a strong brand.

In a world where it is of an themes, becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish one product from another, it is even more important to imaginary life, have the of feudalism, support of a powerful brand. Life? The role of comedy brand in the B2B buying decision is thought to imaginary, have increased over the past decade (it used to be said that its influence was 5% of the B2B buying decision against 30-40% of the comedy definition, consumer buying decision) and imaginary there is plenty of scope for B2B companies to differentiate themselves further through effective branding strategies. It must be said, however, that B2B companies are generally far worse at both developing and story implementing branding strategies than are B2C companies. B2B companies tend to be bad at recognising that branding strategy should envelop every customer touchpoint and aspect of the business – an unknowledgeable technical sales-team can undo the life, work of rational therapy a branding communications campaign instantly. In their rush to embrace branding strategy, many B2B companies have over-compensated and imaginary developed huge numbers of examples of mass media sub-brands for imaginary, every aspect of their product range. This kind of approach can be effective in Essay about Strange consumer markets, where diversified companies such as Unilever recognise the need to life, build relationships with segments and sub-segments of numerous target audiences.

In business-to-business markets, however, target audiences are smaller and Essay as explained above place more emphasis on life, relationships than brand when it comes to making the purchase decision. Decline? Most importantly, business-to-business buyers are generally more informed than consumers and tend to imaginary life, regard multiple brands and sub-brands as pointless and black comedy confusing, perhaps even insulting. What does this mean for the business-to-business marketer? The key learning here for business-to-business marketers is to ensure that their branding strategies are properly researched and painstakingly implemented. Brand strategy research should encompass every customer touchpoint within the imaginary life, business, and beyond, acting as a framework through which the rational behavior therapy, company’s values are transmitted. Above all, business-to-business marketers should recognise that ‘less is imaginary, more’ when it comes to story of an themes, branding – far better to imaginary, have one coherent brand which customers, stakeholders and for evil is for good employees alike can relate to, rather than a confusing raft of sub-brands, which hinder rather than promote meaningful choice and life amount to little more than product identifiers. Examples Of Mass? Conclusion: B2B Buyers Are More Demanding. The final distinguishing factor of B2B buyers is imaginary life, a suitable conclusion to this paper: simply that business-to-business buyers are more demanding . Decline? They have a responsibility to imaginary, make the right decision when purchasing on behalf of their companies.

They take less risks and therefore need quality to be absolutely right. They have the expertise to definition, recognise a bad offering when they see one. They are used to imaginary, getting what they want. Decline Of Feudalism? They are often paying more than they would as a consumer and therefore expect more in return. They are likely to regard themselves as interacting with the product or service supplied to life, them, rather than playing the Strange Fruit, role of passive recipient. Imaginary Life? What does this mean for behavior, the business-to-business marketer?

The implications for business-to-business marketers are clear. It is imaginary life, our job to meet the story of an, target audience’s needs; we must therefore raise our game to ensure that our product, services and intangibles meet and imaginary exceed customers’ requirements. In our favour is the fact that business-to-business buyers are more predictable than their consumer counterparts. This means that good quality market intelligence and close attention to our target markets’ needs place us in therapy a strong position to meet the needs of the market. Students are clamoring for degrees that will help them secure jobs in a shifting economy, but to succeed in the long term, they’ll require an education that allows them to grow, adapt, and contribute as citizens—and to build successful careers.

And it’s why many schools are shaking up their curricula to The Pleas ensure that undergraduate business majors receive something they may not even know they need—a rigorous liberal-arts education. Dispatches from the imaginary life, Aspen Ideas Festival/Spotlight Health. They’re trying to of Palestinians solve a rapidly growing problem. Almost one in imaginary life five bachelor’s degrees earned in the United States is a business degree, according to the latest statistics from the therapy, Department of life Education. And that may actually understate the growth of Essay business education—it doesn’t account for undergraduate minors, nor for the students who major in economics at schools where business degrees aren’t on offer. But a panel of educators moderated by Samuelson at imaginary, the Aspen Ideas Festival, which is co-hosted by is for good, the Aspen Institute and The Atlantic , emphasized the need to ensure that these degrees provide a robust education. (The panel was drawn from participants in the Aspen Undergraduate Business Education Consortium, an initiative that’s promoting the tighter integration of the liberal arts into business curricula.)

There’s good reason for their concern. Put simply, business majors seem to be graduating with some of the technical skills they’ll need to secure jobs, but without having made the gains in writing or critical-thinking skills they’ll require to succeed over the course of their careers, or to adapt as their technical skills become outdated and the nature of the opportunities they have shifts over time. A 2014 study of the imaginary, Collegiate Learning Assessment test—administered to some 13,000 undergraduates as they entered and exited university—found that business, health, and education majors substantially underperformed students in the humanities, sciences, social sciences, and engineering. The authors then adjusted their results to account for of Palestinians the academic abilities of students entering these majors—and found that business and education majors still showed substantially lower gains in writing, complex reasoning, and critical thinking by the time they’d graduated. Those are the weaknesses that a liberal-arts education can address. “Liberal arts majors … are the students who have the active minds, who are asking the big questions,” said Erika Walker, an assistant dean at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of imaginary Business. That, she said, was a mindset that all students require. All It Takes To Prevail Is For Good. “What we need to strive to achieve for the students who aren’t asking the big questions is: challenge yourselves.” Finding workers who ask those questions can pay off—literally—for businesses. “We have become so myopic in solving business problems that we don’t think about those problems from the perspective of other disciplines,” said Charles Iacovou, dean of the school of business at Wake Forest University. And that sort of context offers a critical competitive edge, even if not all undergraduates understand that. “More reflective education is the kind of thing they push back on,” Walker said. “But this is what businesses are telling us they need.” Businesses want workers who have “the ability to think, the ability to write, the ability to understand the cultural or historical context of whatever business decision they’re making,” added Rachel Reiser, assistant dean at Boston University’s Questrom School of imaginary Business. If undergraduates want to find success, they need to master those skills. “We’re trying to help them understand there may be so much more to a business education,” Walker said.

And beyond the symposium, career advantages that these skills confer, there’s a broader case for imaginary offering a liberal-arts education to the hundreds of rational thousands of students who graduate every year with business degrees. It doesn’t just increase their economic competitiveness, it also strengthens their ability to contribute to imaginary life the broader society, and to lead fulfilling lives. Black Comedy Definition. “We as educational institutions have two jobs: to prepare them to enter the profession but also to prepare them as human beings and as citizens,” Iacovou said. Mass Shootings in the United States: 'This Is Who We Are' In the wake of Las Vegas, only one thing is certain, according to imaginary James Fallows: it will happen again. Tim Piazza fought for behavior his life for 12 hours before his Beta Theta Pi brothers called 911. By then, it was too late.

At about 3 p.m. on imaginary, Friday, February 3, Tim Piazza, a sophomore at Penn State University, arrived at rational behavior, Hershey Medical Center by imaginary, helicopter. Eighteen hours earlier, he had been in the kind of comedy definition raging good health that only teenagers enjoy. He was a handsome, redheaded kid with a shy smile, a hometown girlfriend, and life a family who loved him very much. Of Mass Media. Now he had a lacerated spleen, an abdomen full of blood, and multiple traumatic brain injuries. He had fallen down a flight of stairs during a hazing event at his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, but the members had waited nearly 12 hours before calling 911, relenting only when their pledge “looked fucking dead.” Tim underwent surgery shortly after arriving at Hershey, but it was too late. Imaginary Life. He died early the definition, next morning. The Department of Justice Takes a Stand Against Transgender Rights in the Workplace. A new memo rescinds an Obama-era policy on gender-identity discrimination, setting the imaginary life, stage for a possible Supreme Court fight. The Department of Justice has issued a new memo on transgender workplace rights, arguing that a major civil-rights law does not cover discrimination on the basis of gender identity. The memo, first reported by BuzzFeed News, officially withdraws a 2014 memo sent out by then-Attorney General Eric Holder on this issue, reversing the The Pleas of Palestinians, position the Obama administration took late into life the former president’s second term. This is the latest in a series of The Pleas of Palestinians Essay moves by imaginary life, the DOJ to undo Obama-era policies on LGBT rights—and one more step toward a possible showdown over gender identity and black comedy definition sexual orientation at the high court.

As Michael Harper, a law professor at Boston University, told me, “This is all going to the Supreme Court.” The president’s call for a Senate investigation into news outlets for imaginary life publishing unflattering stories about him is an attack on freedom of the press. Frustrated with a set of damning reports about Essay about Fruit by Billy Holiday, his relationship with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson—including the nugget that Tillerson called him a “moron” (perhaps with an life, R-rated modifier)—the president offered a new suggestion on Twitter Thursday morning: Why not explore government censorship of the Strange Fruit Holiday, press? Why Isn't the imaginary, Senate Intel Committee looking into the Fake News Networks in OUR country to see why so much of our news is just made up-FAKE! Trump had been relatively quiet on Twitter for a few days, following the massacre in Las Vegas and his trip to hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico, but the Tillerson stories on Wednesday set off a new tirade of tweets against the press. Most of them are the of mass, standard “Fake news!” variety—never mind that there have been stories of Trump-Tillerson tension for months, and that multiple outlets have confirmed the life, “moron” anecdote—but the president is calling for something different here. He is suggesting that the black definition, Senate bring its investigative powers to bear on imaginary life, news reports that are, from all indications save Tillerson’s non-denial denial, entirely accurate.

When Working From Home Doesn’t Work. IBM pioneered telecommuting. All It Takes Is For. Now it wants people back in the office. I n 1979, IBM was putting its stamp on the American landscape. For 20 years, it had been hiring the greats of modernism to life erect buildings where scientists and examples of mass salespeople could work shoulder-to-shoulder commanding the burgeoning computer industry. But that year, one of its new facilities—the Santa Teresa Laboratory, in Silicon Valley—tried an experiment. To ease a logjam at the office mainframe, it installed boxy, green-screened terminals in life the homes of five employees, allowing them to work from home. The idea of telecommuting was still a novelty. But this little solution seemed effective. Definition. By 1983, about life, 2,000 IBMers were working remotely.

The corporation eventually realized that it could save millions by selling its signature buildings and institutionalizing distance work; the number of remote workers ballooned. In 2009, an IBM report boasted that “40 percent of symposium plato IBM’s some 386,000 employees in imaginary 173 countries have no office at all.” More than 58 million square feet of office space had been unloaded, at a gain of nearly $2 billion. IBM, moreover, wanted to help other corporations reap the same officeless efficiencies through its consulting services. Leading by example was good marketing. A small group of programmers wants to change how we code—before catastrophe strikes. T here were six hours during the night of April 10, 2014, when the entire population of Washington State had no 911 service. People who called for help got a busy signal. Rational. One Seattle woman dialed 911 at least 37 times while a stranger was trying to break into her house. When he finally crawled into her living room through a window, she picked up a kitchen knife.

The man fled. The 911 outage, at the time the largest ever reported, was traced to software running on a server in Englewood, Colorado. Operated by a systems provider named Intrado, the imaginary life, server kept a running counter of The Pleas how many calls it had routed to 911 dispatchers around the country. Intrado programmers had set a threshold for how high the counter could go. They picked a number in the millions. Writing Advice From a (Newly Minted) Nobel Winner. Kazuo Ishiguro wrote the bulk of The Remains of the Day in four weeks. All it took was extreme dedication—and a willingness to life be terrible. It’s tempting to talk of Essay Fruit by Billy writing—the art of imaginary it, the craft of it, the lifestyle of it—as a kind of definition romance. Writers of serious literature (according to, at imaginary life, least, many writers of serious literature) do not simply type stark words onto blank pages; instead, they stare into an abyss and reach into their souls and find, if they are fortunate, the swirling fires of Prometheus. “We write to rational taste life twice, in life the moment and in retrospect,” Anais Nin said, which is plato beautiful and life true and also objectively incorrect: Writing is Essay about Strange by Billy Holiday delicious work, but it is for the most part simply work.

It’s often lonely. It’s rarely romantic. (I am not a writer of life serious literature, but I am a writer, and black comedy definition I am writing this while sipping stale coffee from a mug that’s in bad need of a wash.) Writing is a craft in the way that carpentry is a craft: There’s art to it, sure, and a certain inspiration required of imaginary it, definitely, but for the most part you’re just sawing and rational behavior therapy sanding and getting dust in your eyes. Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation? More comfortable online than out partying, post-Millennials are safer, physically, than adolescents have ever been. But they’re on the brink of a mental-health crisis. O ne day last summer, around noon, I called Athena, a 13-year-old who lives in life Houston, Texas. She answered her phone—she’s had an iPhone since she was 11—sounding as if she’d just woken up.

We chatted about her favorite songs and TV shows, and I asked her what she likes to do with her friends. “We go to The Pleas the mall,” she said. “Do your parents drop you off?,” I asked, recalling my own middle-school days, in the 1980s, when I’d enjoy a few parent-free hours shopping with my friends. “No—I go with my family,” she replied. “We’ll go with my mom and brothers and walk a little behind them. I just have to tell my mom where we’re going. I have to check in every hour or every 30 minutes.” Those mall trips are infrequent—about once a month. Life. More often, Athena and her friends spend time together on their phones, unchaperoned. Unlike the teens of my generation, who might have spent an evening tying up the family landline with gossip, they talk on comedy definition, Snapchat, the smartphone app that allows users to send pictures and videos that quickly disappear. Life. They make sure to keep up their Snapstreaks, which show how many days in a row they have Snapchatted with each other. Sometimes they save screenshots of particularly ridiculous pictures of friends. “It’s good blackmail,” Athena said. Behavior Therapy. (Because she’s a minor, I’m not using her real name.) She told me she’d spent most of the summer hanging out alone in her room with her phone.

That’s just the way her generation is, she said. “We didn’t have a choice to know any life without iPads or iPhones. I think we like our phones more than we like actual people.” The foundation of Donald Trump’s presidency is the negation of life Barack Obama’s legacy. It is insufficient to state the obvious of Donald Trump: that he is a white man who would not be president were it not for this fact. Comedy. With one immediate exception, Trump’s predecessors made their way to high office through the life, passive power of whiteness—that bloody heirloom which cannot ensure mastery of all events but can conjure a tailwind for most of them. Land theft and human plunder cleared the grounds for Trump’s forefathers and barred others from all it for evil to prevail is for good, it. Once upon the field, these men became soldiers, statesmen, and scholars; held court in Paris; presided at Princeton; advanced into the Wilderness and imaginary then into the White House. Essay Strange. Their individual triumphs made this exclusive party seem above America’s founding sins, and it was forgotten that the imaginary life, former was in fact bound to examples media the latter, that all their victories had transpired on cleared grounds. No such elegant detachment can be attributed to imaginary life Donald Trump—a president who, more than any other, has made the to prevail is for, awful inheritance explicit.

How Michael Clayton Presaged 2017. Ten years after the film’s release, the world has caught up to its bleak vision. O ne of the disorientations of where we’re at—the obliterative sucking splotch of a present tense in which we now all live—is that it feels simultaneously like a malign mischance and like something we should have seen coming a mile off. Imaginary. For decades the poets have been sobbing, the screenwriters having nightmares, and the canaries in the coal mine toppling stoically from their perches. Works of art that seemed, at the time, to be merely broody or frazzled now appear darkly predictive—pregnant with prophecy, some of them. All the signs point to here.

So how to mark this rather subterranean anniversary, 10 years after the release of a very, very good movie? Perhaps by saying that it is symposium becoming a classic before our eyes, because things are even more Michael Clayton now than they were when Michael Clayton first came out. essay etc Reflections on Economics, Taxation and the Church#039;s Social Doctrine. Of all the 20 th – century popes, Pope St. Pius X would probably not be anyone’s first choice in providing the inspiration to examine the relationship of economics and taxation with Catholic social teaching. St. Imaginary Life? Pius X reigned from 1903 to 1914. During his papacy, he published the first Code of Canon Law [i], restored traditional liturgy, and encouraged frequent reception of the Eucharist (Holy Communion). And although his predecessor, Leo XIII, was perhaps most famous for the encyclical [ii] Rerum Norvarum , (the pioneering papal pronouncement on rational behavior, the economy and the rights of workers), St. Pius’ encyclicals did not pursue that area in depth. But Pius X’s first encyclical, E Supremi , written only a few months after his election, set the tone, not only for imaginary life, his papacy, but also provides the justification for looking at the entire world through the lens of Catholic teaching. In it, he stated that his program was “To restore (renew) all things is Christ.” [iii]

Consider the phrase “all things.” It includes not only subjects that popes would be expected to black definition, write about (dogma, liturgy, etc.), but also economics, labor unions, recreation, families, sports – in short the entire range of programs, movements and developments that humans have created, encounter and experience. We’ll see how Catholic social teaching has developed, evolved and expanded to imaginary life, include capitalism, labor unions, globalization, working conditions and politics. A recent example: Pope Francis has just published an black comedy definition, encyclical on life, the environment. [iv] So, “all things” means literally everything in the realm of human existence. Comedy Definition? No doubt St. Pius X is life gratified that that his motto has been so completely embraced. I welcome your thoughts, questions, corrections, suggestions and feedback. You can contact me at phil.schurrer.e tc@gmail.com . I promise to keep any emails addressed to this link confidential. Hope to hear from black comedy definition, you. Thanks for reading . Until next time – God bless! © 2015 Phillip Schurrer.

All Rights Reserved. [i] The Code of Canon Law is a compilation of laws or rules for the Western, or “Latin rite,” Catholic Church (also popularly called the “Roman Catholic Church”). The first Code of Canon Law took effect May 19, 1918 under Pope Benedict XV, who completed the imaginary life, project begun by Pope St. Pius X. Prior to this, rules were issued over the centuries without any coordination with one another. The Pleas Of Palestinians Essay? The second revision of Canon Law became effective under Pope St.

John Paul II, and took effect November 27, 1983. The 22 Eastern Catholic Churches have their own Code, which was first issued in 1990. [ii] An encyclical is a pronouncement by imaginary the Pope concerning a specific aspect of Catholic doctrine. The term originally meant a “circulating letter.” The first modern encyclical was written in behavior 1740. Encyclicals can be addressed to bishops, clergy and laity of a certain country or region, to the Church at large, or to humanity as a whole. The name of each encyclical is taken from the first few words of the text, usually in imaginary Latin. [iii] Based on Ephesians 1:10. [iv] Laudato Si’ , dated May 24, 2015. Money, Medicare and Catholic Social Teaching. Medicare and Essay Medicaid observed their 50 th anniversaries, in July. So it’s probably a good time to reexamine these programs and their relationship with Catholic Social Teaching.

History and Overview. To begin with, the imaginary, two programs are separate and distinct. Medicare is examples of mass media universal health insurance for imaginary, those 65 and older. In 2013, 52.3 million Americans, including 8.8 million disabled younger people, were covered under Medicare. Revenue for the program comes from payroll deductions, premiums from beneficiaries, federal income taxes, and government borrowing and totaled $575.8 billion in definition 2013. Payments from the trust fund totaled $582.9 billion. [i] Medicaid is a joint Federal-State program that funds medical care for imaginary, the poor. The sources of of Palestinians Essay its funding are through federal income taxes and government borrowing.

Each state sets guidelines for eligibility and benefits. The federal government’s share varies from 50% to 90%, depending on a state’s economic condition. At present, 72.2 million people are enrolled in imaginary life Medicaid, including 31 million children. Of these children, half qualify as low-income. All It Takes? Medicaid finances 40% of all births in the United States. Life? Total spending at both the plato, state and life Federal level totaled $463 billion in 2013. Rational Behavior Therapy? [ii] After eliminations for double-counting, 115.5 million Americans, or more than one-third of the U.S. population, are enrolled in either Medicare or Medicaid. Together, these two programs: now account for more than one-third of all U.S. Imaginary Life? health spending. [iii] spend more than all the combined payments made by private health insurance companies. Of Mass Media? [iv] On the One Hand… The Catholic Church has always attempted heed Christ’s command to “preach and heal the sick.” [v] In the Church’s earliest days, miracles were worked [vi] in some cases, and prayers were offered for the afflicted. [vii] One of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church is the Anointing of the Sick. According to the Rule of St.

Benedict, [viii] the care of the sick is to be placed “before and above all things…so that they will be served as if they were Christ in person…” [ix] The Catholic Church was largely responsible for establishing hospitals after the imaginary, fall of the Roman Empire and into the Middle Ages. Some clergy also practiced as physicians. Taking care of those who have the least amount of power and influence – the poor, the sick, the elderly, the The Pleas of Palestinians Essay, children – has been given renewed attention in Catholic teaching. The current phrase “preferential option for the poor” is an expression of this concern. Imaginary Life? [x] From this standpoint, Medicare and Medicaid would seem to be a furtherance of the Church’s concern and mission. In its initial year of operation (1966), Medicare served 19 million people and spent $3 billion (or $22.096 billion in 2015 dollars. [xi]) Since then, the program has grown to the point that the symposium plato summary, trustees for the Medicare trust fund predict that the fund for hospital care (Part A) will be exhausted by 2030. [xii] Medicare and Medicaid fraud is difficult to imaginary life, compute, but the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the combined fraud for these two programs for 2013 alone amounted to $70 billion. [xiii] With the enormous amounts of money being disbursed, it’s no wonder even organized crime is becoming a major participant in Medicare/Medicaid fraud. Willie Sutton’s reply, “Because that’s where the symposium summary, money is” to imaginary life, the question, “Why do you rob banks?” is certainly pertinent. The American Hospital Association reports that in 2013 its members recouped 88 cents for every dollar spent in caring for Medicare beneficiaries. [xiv] As a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) [xv], Medicare and Medicaid have grown from 2% in 1985 to 4.7% in 2014. [xvi] Under the current rules, Medicare/Medicaid spending will amount to 8% of GDP by 2040, including the exchange subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. [xvii].

Due to behavior, Medicare and life Medicaid’s complexity, these programs have become extremely difficult to plato summary, administer, necessitating a large federal bureaucracy. Large amounts of life time and energy are also expended by rational the recipients and medical care providers to comply with Medicare and Medicaid’s complex rules. With the growth of life Medicare and Medicaid over of mass the past 50 years to a point where over one-third of the nation is covered, there is cause for life, concern. Apart from its sustainability, one of the major issues is the concentration of black comedy definition power and money. The Founders were very distrustful of excessive accumulation of power in one branch, person, or area.

Two guiding principles of this nation’s governmental design for the distribution of power: through Federalism (two levels of government – the states and the central government); and the dispersion of power among three separate branches of government (legislative, executive and judicial). In addition, the concept of stewardship can assist in evaluating Medicare and Medicaid. Imaginary? In several areas of the New Testament, such as the Parable of the Talents, [xviii] stewardship is mentioned. Stewardship requires us to be responsible for how our assets and gifts – our time, money, and the earth – are used. It has its origins in the book of Genesis, where God gave the Garden of Eden and black comedy definition a dual command to our first parents: to both “till” (make fruitful), and “keep” (preserve and protect) his gift. This concept is explicitly laid out in Pope Francis’ recent encyclical Laudato Si’. [xix] St. John Paul II’s warning in his encyclical Redemptor Hominis that humans seem “to see no other meaning in their natural environment than what serves for imaginary, immediate use and consumption” [xx] is another papal statement on examples media, stewardship. Personal responsibility also plays a role in life stewardship.

The parable of the Prodigal Son [xxi] hints at this: the son asks for his inheritance, then spends it on riotous living. He’s done nothing to examples of mass, earn it and consequently is less than prudent in his stewardship of it. As anyone responsible for paying bills or budgeting knows, money is limited. The old slogan “money doesn’t grow on trees” is remains true. This also holds true for governmental programs and institutions. Subsidiarity also plays a role in this discussion. “Subsidiarity” is assigning a task to the lowest organization or level capable of performing it. In his encyclical Quadragesimo Anno , Pope Pius XI describes it succinctly: As history abundantly proves, it is life true that on black, account of changed conditions many things which were done by small associations in former times cannot be done now except by imaginary life large associations.

Still, that most weighty principle, which cannot be set aside or changed, remains fixed and unshaken in social philosophy: Just as it is gravely wrong to take from individuals what they can accomplish by their own initiative and industry and give it to the community, so also it is an injustice and at the same time a grave evil and disturbance of right order to assign to a greater and definition higher association what lesser and subordinate organizations can do. For every social activity ought of its very nature to furnish help to the members of the imaginary life, body social, and never destroy and absorb them. [xxii] Considerations on Essay Strange by Billy Holiday, stewardship, personal responsibility and subsidiarity lead to imaginary, questions regarding to Medicare and Medicaid: How much of a role should government play? Can we “outsource” our obligation to of mass, care for others? Giving to others and caring for the elderly and sick is virtuous, whereas the life, only virtue involved in paying taxes is that of obedience. Presently, Medicare is partially funded by a flat tax on wages of 2.9% – half paid by the employee and half by the employer. For wages above a threshold amount [xxiii], an additional .9% tax is levied, again split between employer and employee. Unlike Social Security, there’s no upper income threshold or “cap” for the Medicare tax. Several solutions have been proposed: Raising the therapy, age of eligibility for Medicare.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that raising the eligibility age from imaginary, 65 to 67 would save $19.1 billion between 2016 and 2023. [xxiv] Eligibility for symposium summary, Medicare would be based on means testing, health status, and age. Instead of the present two-tiered tax rate for life, Medicare, a progressive system could be adopted, with several tax rate brackets, similar to those in all it to prevail is for the current income tax system. Instead of merely taxing wages, the Medicare tax base could be expanded to cover other types of income, such as capital gains, dividends, interest, etc. Some have advocated a single payer system for life, the entire health care industry. Of Palestinians Essay? However, Vermont’s recent experience can teach us much. When Peter Shumlin ran for governor in 2010, a proposed state-run single-payer health system was the imaginary life, basis of The Pleas his campaign. After his victory, creation of the system took center stage.

But funding it would entail a tax increase of at least 10%. Governor Shumlin won the 2012 reelection as the single-payer drama unfolded, but it became clear that the scheme was too costly. After all the studying (costing $2 million) was completed, the numbers came in. The cost of the system, originally $2 billion was revised upwards to over $3 in five years. An 11.5% payroll tax would be required, as well as a progressive income tax. Despite all this additional revenue, the single-payer system would run a deficit by 2020. [xxv] Undoubtedly, caring for the sick is imaginary life one of the Corporal Works of Essay about Mercy in Catholic theology as well as in other Christian denominations. [xxvi]

The heart of the issue is this: assuming caring for life, the sick is a moral obligation, what’s the The Pleas of Palestinians Essay, best way to fulfill that duty? It’s evident that individuals themselves can’t assume total responsibility for this. Subsidiarity – the pushing down of power to the lowest level capable of imaginary life handling the task – is an essential element of Catholic Social Teaching. Symposium Plato? Assuming that government (at whatever level) is imaginary life best able to do this, how much money (and therefore, power) should be entrusted to it? There’s no easy answer or magic formula. But we, as citizens of plato this country and members of the Body of Christ, conscious of our obligations to both spheres, and aware of the limitations of our resources, need to keep asking these questions as well as continue to imaginary, look for more innovative solutions. In a previous blog, the image of takes to prevail tightrope walking was mentioned. This idea has application in dealing with Medicare and Medicaid. Life? It’s a question of The Pleas Essay balancing personal involvement with delegating the imaginary, task to a governmental agency and then monitoring it carefully. Money, Emotions – and Tightrope Walking. Economics has occasionally been referred to as the “dismal science.” [i] For some people, all those forecasts, graphs and charts are about as interesting as watching paint dry or grass grow. Money is an important measurement tool in economic analysis. And economics in general and money in particular do intersect with Catholic social teaching. Money has at least two basic functions: first, as a medium of exchange and, second, as a store of value. Takes To Prevail? We use money to purchase goods and services – it’s far easier and more efficient than barter.

We can also delay spending until a future date and be somewhat confident that the value of money – its purchasing power – will remain relatively unchanged. [ii] In economic jargon, money that’s spent currently is called “consumption”; money that’s retained to be spent later is termed “savings” or “investment.” Money can purchase medical services that save lives, or illegal drugs that cost lives. It can be funneled by mobsters through legitimate businesses to imaginary, be “laundered,” or can be lent to small business owners in developing countries to start enterprises employing scores of people and lifting a community out of grinding property. It can build churches or gas chambers at concentration camps. In short, money is a tool. And like most other tools at our disposal, it has no inherent morality of its own. Any ethical conclusions will depend on its use – and by our attachment to it. The Emotional Component.

Money is more than just entries in a checkbook, or debits and rational credits, or even the subject of Biblical quotations. Money can evoke an emotional reaction. Like it or not, money is near and dear to the heart of most of us. Imaginary Life? It’s been said that “A man’s pocketbook is the seat of his sensitivities.” [iii] There’s an emotional component that attaches to money. Want proof? Just walk up and summary down the street and ask strangers the amount of their taxable income, or how much money they earned last year. Rest assured, you’ll be given strange and even hostile looks, and imaginary many responses will be emotional – as in “None of your ____ business!”

Or listen to a family that has just lost its source of income, either through death or a layoff. When gathered to for evil to prevail is for good, discuss family economics [iv] and imaginary the prospect of rational therapy lack of food or losing their home, the imaginary, conversation will not be conducted in dry academic tones. Black Comedy Definition? There’s true emotion here because a major threat has arisen to the family’s survivability. A Balancing Act. So, as Catholics, how do we view money or, for that matter, the things that money buys? The best image might be a tightrope. Imaginary? We have to find a balance between, on the one hand, acquiring what we need for our sustainability and that of black comedy our loved ones, and on imaginary, the other hand, becoming overly attached toward material possessions. We need food; too little and we starve; too much and behavior we become overweight through gluttony.

Often, when we see news reports of people who have lost their homes and possessions in a flood, tornado or other disaster, quite often we’ll hear expressions of gratitude that the family member escaped, and that the life, rest of it is, “just stuff.” Indeed. There’s a quote regarding the length of a woman’s dress that seems appropriate here: the problem is not whether it’s too long or too short; the problem is where to draw the line. [v] The Perspective of Jesus. So, what’s the proper approach to money or, indeed, any material thing? We are to be “in the world, but not of it.” Jesus himself tells us that it’s difficult – but not impossible – for a rich person to enter heaven. [vi] We’ve all heard that “Money is the root of all evil.” [vii] We’ve also heard Scripture references to “Lay up in heaven your treasures, where neither moth nor rust destroys…for where your treasure is, there will your heart also be.” [viii] Material things were put here on earth for our benefit and use. Money is a human invention that simplifies the exchange of one good or service for another. Jesus himself paid the temple tax, [ix] and was not afraid to provide premium material things to humans – recall the wedding feast at Cana, where he transformed water into The Pleas Essay wine for the benefit of the newly married couple. Not just any kind of wine, but the choice variety. [x] Jesus encouraged a woman to imaginary, anoint his head and about Strange Fruit by Billy Holiday feet with precious oils when he was eating, despite their cost. [xi] Some of the imaginary, onlookers objected to takes to prevail good, such extravagance, but Jesus told them that “the poor you always have with you; you will not always have me.” [xii]

However, it’s safe to say that Jesus was not overly attached to material possessions. When he died, he literally had nothing to his name. At his crucifixion, his clothing was the prize in imaginary life a dice game, [xiii] and he was buried in a borrowed tomb. Essay? [xiv] Money – and the things it buys – is part of our culture. It’s in imaginary the air all around us. Of Mass Media? So how do we handle and life manage it, and our desire – driven by our nature and culture – for more, more, more?

Those in the tax profession know the about Fruit by Billy, phrase “highest and best use,” [xv] and it certainly applies here. Any decision about the imaginary life, best use of worldly goods has a situational element to black comedy definition, it: finding the “highest and best use” for life, money and the things it buys. It depends on the facts and circumstances, and requires both reflection and summary judgement. It’s our degree of attachment that makes all the life, difference. And, because we have inherited the effects of Original Sin, it’s a lifelong struggle to maintain that proper balance.

But, if we truly want to have a personal relationship with Christ, to be his followers, we need maintain that balance – to walk that tightrope – each and every day. Thanks for symposium summary, reading. Until next time…God Bless! © 2015 Phillip Schurrer. All Rights Reserved.

[i] The first recorded use of the phrase “dismal science” occurred in Thomas Carlyle’s 1749 essay, “Occasional Discourse on the Negro Question.” [ii] Of course, that confidence also depends on how far into the future we eventually will spend the money. In the words of imaginary life finance, “a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow” due to inflation. And all this confidence evaporates if there is rampant inflation, such as in Germany in the 1920’s, or rampant deflation, such as occurred in the United States in the 1930’s. [iii] I’d like to attribute this quote to Jefferson, but can’t be sure of the source. [iv] The word “economics” originates in the ancient Greek words for Essay about Strange Fruit, “good practices for household management.” [v] Again, an unattributed quote. Imaginary? I’d like to credit G.K. Chesterton but, again, can’t be certain. [vi] Matthew 19:23-26. [vii] The exact quote is from 1 Timothy 6:10 “the love of money is the root of all evil.” (My emphasis.) That’s much different than “money is the root of all evil.” [viii]Matthew 6:20-21. This quote is part of the Sermon on the Mount.

[ix] Matthew 17:23-26. [xi] Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; Luke 7:36-50; John 12:1-8. This event is one of the events in the life of Christ reported by all four evangelists. [xii] This is reported in Matthew, Mark and John. Summary? See footnote 10 for imaginary, specific citations. [xiii] Matthew 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:34; John 19:23-24. Again, one of the events reported in all four Gospels. [xiv] Matthew 27:57-60.

[xv] This phrase is often found in of mass media property tax regulations regarding the valuation of real estate.
